In Judy Weeden's Salt Spring studio, this workshop is designed to be a time for total immersion in the creative process for students seriously committed to working with clay. Students at any level of previous experience will find invaluable stimulation and new skills. The primary focus is on form, its aethetics, and its decoration, using traditional techniques as stepping stones to personal expression.

LOCATION:
Country studio of Judy Weeden, 125 Primrose Lane, Saltspring Island, British Columbia, Canada.

Workshop Outline:
Hrs. 8.30 am to 4.30 pm and beyond

The focus of this workshop is to develop and refine throwing skills for basic forms (cylinders, bowls, plates, covered containers and variants of these) that are both functionally valid and aesthetically strong. A further aim is to train students to critically examine form and learn what makes a pot come to life.

Skilled throwers will move quickly to more complex forms through altering and assembling thrown or slab components. In addition to developing valid forms, assignments will include prefiring decorating techniques using texturing and slip-carving to complement and enhance form.Glazing and firing instruction will not be offered.

Each day will have specific assignments. Upon completion of an assignment the student will move on to the next assignment. Students that have demonstrated competence in throwing basic forms can move on to more complex forms and/or projects of their own chosing. Each student's assignment will be reviewed by the instructor.

The studio is open at all times and students are free to work after formal class hours have ended.

My personal pottery library is available for use on the premises.

Four yoga sessions, taught by highly experienced yoga teacher Celeste Mallett (Ganges Yoga Centre) are included. Taking place on the lawn in front of the studio, these yoga sessions are specifically designed to relieve the work-related body tensions of the potters. They also teach the mindful awareness so parallel to the development of good throwing skills.

Students are expected to bring their own brown bag lunches for a mid-day break and remain on the premises for the full work day.
